Babyshambles Frontman Set To Open Animal Sanctuary

You couldn’t make this up. It appears that Pete Doherty, the former Libertine is keen to open a welfare sanctuary for animals at his Wiltshire home. According to 'inside sources' the plan is galloping forward and could be open to visitors and school children later this year - I can't help thinking that I'd be happier to send my kids on a trip to the Neverland Ranch.

The residents of the refuge so far appear to be a collection of cats, a rat that is missing a tail and a hedgehog that only has one leg – apparently St Pete of Assisi has named the tri-plegig animal Mrs Tiggywinkle. The image in my head of animal sanctuaries is one of frail little animals being fed milk through a syringe – unfortunately when you place Pete Doherty into this picture it takes on an altogether more sinister air.

So committed to this project is our hero that it is rumoured he plans to change his name by deed poll to 'Pet Doherty'. It will be interesting to see what other inhabitants end up at the rescue centre – lets be honest you know that you're in need of rescuing if the only person left to care for you is Mr Doherty. Who knows – perhaps this is just what the doctor ordered. Maybe this might give Pete a focus. He is obviously very devoted to all animals and in particular birds. I have it on good authority that he is particularly fond of heron (I must remember to run this through the spell check...)
