U2 TO GO FOR NEW SOUND

Bono Says Band Will Change Musical Direction

Irish rockers U2 look set for a new sound. Front man Bono explained to BBC Radio that the band had reached the end of a chapter and were ready for a new challenge.

The band are currently riding high in the album chart with their greatest hits album, 'U218 Singles', which the four-piece say was aimed at their younger, emerging new audience who haven't had the chance to enjoy much of the band's earlier work. However, the next offering will be along different lines.

The singer said: "Our band has certainly reached the end of where we've been at for the last couple of albums. I want to see what else we can do with it, take it to the next level; I think that's what we've got to do. We're gonna continue to be a band, but maybe the rock will have to go; maybe the rock has to get a lot harder. But whatever it is, it's not gonna stay where it is. I would like to do a couple of tunes in that direction, with just a lot of space around the voice, I'd like to strip things down; that's something I'd be very interested in at the moment."

So that's harder rock but with a pared back, softer sound...it seems like the honorary Sir Bono is thinking aloud. Whatever the new sound - be it MTV Unplugged-style, pop-rock or hard rock - U2's legion of faithful fans are sure to lap it up.
